Sydney Metro, engineering the future of urban mobility.
Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure project. The project includes multiple stages, including the city-shaping Sydney Metro Northwest and the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. Both are vital to linking growing communities with future jobs, public transport, and major gateways like Western Sydney International Airport.

Engineering the future
The Sydney Metro North West Line is the first completed stage of Sydney Metro, delivering over 36km of new metro rail in Australia along with a new generation of fully automated trains. SMEC partnered with Mott MacDonald and KBR as the Design Joint Venture, delivering fast-tracked design works to meet the project deadline.
Operations, Trains and Systems
As part of the Design Joint Venture with Mott MacDonald and KBR, we delivered full design services – civil, structural, mechanical, electrical – for eight new stations, train facilities, and associated infrastructure.
The outcome
Once fully operational, Sydney Metro will redefine how people move across Greater Sydney – reducing travel times, easing congestion and unlocking access to jobs, education and services for generations to come. With each stage designed to integrate seamlessly into existing networks while setting new standards in automation, accessibility and design, the project represents a transformative investment in the city’s liveability, economic resilience and sustainable growth.
