Connected by purpose

Foot bridge external to the hospital

As an academic and administrative workplace, the Patient Support Centre (PSC) consolidates over 3,000 staff from across the hospital and brings together education, training, and operational functions under one roof. It houses the SickKids Learning Institute – supporting over 1,000 trainees annually – and a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre for hands-on clinical training. An enclosed pedestrian bridge connects the building to the hospital’s main atrium and the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, strengthening both the physical and symbolic links between research and care.

Inside, the building is shaped to encourage collaboration. Bright, light-filled workspaces, flexible event zones and interdisciplinary hubs promote interaction among physicians, nurses, administrators, educators, and Foundation teams. The design team also worked closely with the SickKids Children’s Council to incorporate child-led ideas, introducing joyful, humanising touches like murals inspired by children’s drawings and inspirational LED messages in elevators.

External of hospital
The PSC’s undulating façade – animated by horizontal coloured fins – combines visual dynamism with high-performance solar control. A transparent exterior promotes openness between the hospital and community, while terraced green roofs offer spaces for wellness and reflection. A centrepiece blue-ribbon staircase encased in glass visually connects the tower’s internal volumes, drawing daylight into the core and encouraging movement and connection across levels. The building is targeted to meet Toronto’s Tier 2 Building Standards and the WELL Building Standard, advancing sustainability and occupant wellbeing.

“The PSC is a critical piece of infrastructure that will provide our clinical teams with better facilities for training, simulation and collaboration, so that the staff here at SickKids can continue providing the world class care we are known for.”

Dr. Ronald Cohn, President and CEO, SickKids

The outcome

The Patient Support Centre is a cultural cornerstone of SickKids’ reimagined campus. As a launchpad for future transformation, it embodies the hospital’s ethos of “Healthier Children. A Better World”. Through collaborative design, thoughtful integration and architectural clarity, the PSC sets a new benchmark for paediatric healthcare environments – uniting education, research and care to support the next generation of clinical innovation.
