Singapore’s first hospital with purpose-built parkland for patient healing, social interaction, and staff well-being. A continuum of care

The campus construction began in 2017 and brings together Acute and Community Hospitals, a Specialist Outpatient Clinic and a Long-Term Care facility into a cohesive, walkable ecosystem. The site features Singapore’s largest therapeutic garden to date – also the first to be fully integrated with a hospital. A vehicle-free ground level, dementia-friendly living spaces and an integrated childcare centre reflect a design philosophy centred on accessibility, inclusion and everyday use.

Services are co-located by care stream to transform journeys for patients with multiple conditions, enabling them to consult specialists, nurses and therapists all within a single touchpoint.

With passive cooling strategies, PV panels, greenery on the facade to limit heat gain and rainwater harvesting, the campus benefits from a 30% energy reduction. The open ground level spaces double up as rainwater collection channels for irrigation of the green spaces. Bridges link the three blocks, enabling the sharing of centralised resources such as underground car parking, a logistics hub and refuse disposal facilities.

“We sought to create a conducive healing environment in a very large hospital through nature-based designs, which also reduces the carbon footprint of its 24/7 operation. This is done through the combination of passive, active designs and the use of renewable energy sources.”

Michael Leong, Senior Executive Director, Architecture and Design, SJ

The outcome

The Woodlands Health Campus is poised to form a new benchmark for the delivery of healthcare, shifting the model of care from operating within a hospital to a systems-wide approach, in partnership with the community. This is reflected in a more person-centred, nature focused and sustainably designed space for healing and recovery.
